How CBD Interacts With the Endocannabinoid System
A short visual guide to CBD, the ECS and the different formats in which CBD is available.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound found in hemp. Watch our short animation to learn about the body's endocannabinoid system and the different ways CBD products are commonly used.
What is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is one of a number of naturally occurring compounds found in Cannabis sativa L., including varieties commonly referred to as hemp. CBD is different from THC and is used in a variety of wellness-product formats.
What is the Endocannabinoid System?
The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is a signalling network found throughout the human body. It includes naturally produced endocannabinoids, receptors and enzymes and is involved in a range of normal physiological processes.
Naturally produced compounds made within the body that engage the endocannabinoid system.
Receptors found mainly in the central nervous system and other areas of the body.
Receptors associated primarily with the immune system and peripheral tissues.
Enzymes that help create and break down endocannabinoids within the body.
How does CBD interact with the ECS?
CBD's interaction with the body is complex. Researchers continue to study the ways in which CBD may influence the endocannabinoid system and other signalling pathways rather than acting as a simple direct switch for CB1 or CB2 receptors.
